My Favorite Books about the Writing Life As a writer, I love reading books about writing and writers which Ive written about here. But what about the actual writing life? I mean the hours spent, butt-in-chair, staring at a screen while your insides are being eaten up with anxiety over finances, organizing articles, assignment deadlines, and (self-imposed) pressure? What about the effect your writing might have on friends and family, and what that means? Here are some of my favorite books about the writing life the good, bad, and ugly. Scratch: Writers, Money, and the Art of Making a Living, edited by Manjula Martin. I LOVED this book. With contributors like Cheryl Strayed, Roxane Gay, Meaghan OConnell, and Emily Gould, I read through this in one sitting. By now it should be obvious that no one goes into writing for the money, and these essays take a frank and honest look at how writers actually make a living, and the role money plays (or doesnt) in our lives. The Magic of Memoir: Inspiration for the Writing Journey, edited by Linda Joy Myers and Brooke Warner. For me, this is not so much a craft book as a book on the life of a memoir writer. Essays, interspersed with interviews (Mary Karr! Margo Jefferson! Azar Nafisi!), show not only the process of writing a memoir, but how it fits into the larger life of a writer. I find myself returning to this book again and again, like Im picking up a conversation after a lull. Mentor: A Memoir, by Tom Grimes. Oh, this is one of my all-time favorites. So much goodness here: Iowa Writers Workshop, family dynamics, a mentorship with an established writer, and the grind of writing. This is a book that, at its heart, is about connection, and isnt that what writing is really all about? We Wanted to be Writers: Life, Love, and Literature at the Iowa Writers Workshop, edited by Eric Olsen and Glenn Schaeffer. Another one of my favorites (and no, I did not go to Iowa), I picked this up from the bookstore on my last day of work there before I left to move North to start my MFA. I took it as a good sign that the book had just arrived to the store. Its full of stories about the famed Writers Workshop, tips for writing, lists of what books are stacked on the bedside table, and everyday life as both a writing student and a working (or not) writer. This is a sad fact that I believe needs to be further addressed in our schools. Privileged schools like Granite Bay allow us to live in a bubble. Kids that go to our school are unaware of the poverty happening in our own backyard. I lived in Downtown Sacramento in 7th and 8th grade and was able to watch the homeless population rise in that short time. Volunteering at Saint Johnrs allowed me to see what happens to people as they are experiencing homelessness. Saint Johnrs program is targeted towards women who are experiencing homelessness due to an abusive situation. It allows the women to live in a safe place with meals and rooms. They accept volunteers through the week not only to serve dinner but to take care of children and serve breakfast. This program and many others should be brought up in schools as places that kids need to go. Helping our community was something that wasnt brought up until senior year, I think that it would improve the quality of many peoples work if students were required to do a small amount every year, then this amount could be increased slowly allowing kids to get used to volunteering each year. By forcing kids to volunteer once their senior year it turns this great project into a job for many of my peers. This project broadened my horizons, I plan to continue to volunteer with Saint Johnrs as frequently as I am able. I enjoyed seeing the smile on the womens faces when they were able to get their food. It goes to show that the little things are really what counts. For kids in our school I think this project has a great lesson to teach. I had only volunteered once before this project, my stepmother worked at Brighton Preschool my freshman year of high school so I had the opportunity to volunteer in her class. I had a lovely experience playing and teaching the kids. Looking back now that I have volunteered somewhere with poverty stricken families I can see the sharp contrast between the preschoolers that went to Brighton vs the kids in Saint Johnrs. The kids in Saint Johns seemed to be quieter, they were more excited for their food when the time came to eat, and they were less picky about what they were eating. When the kids at Brighton were served there was always many complaints about what was on the menu that day. There was almost always a breakdown at meal time, and they were not as thankful for their food. It makes me sad to think that the kids in Saint Johnrs will grow up not knowing when their next meal is. No child should go hungry. Above are pictures of the Saint Johnrs dinner services, when we serve dinner they get protein, carbs, vegetables and a fruit. I enjoyed meeting the other volunteers during my time at Saint Johnrs as well. One woman who was volunteering told me her story, she used to be in the Saint Johns program but was able to pull herself out. She now has a job and volunteers for Saint Johnrs on the weekends to repay them for helping her and her children. Kids in America today dont understand that there is such poverty in our country. We see on our phones that there is poverty in other countries but rarely acknowledge the poverty in our own backyard. By bettering our own country we are bettering ourselves. Another benefit to this project is that it allows kids to gain more experience in case we need references for job applications. There are so many benefits that are apparent to volunteering. I may have donated my time to Saint Johnrs womens shelter but volunteering for the humane society, volunteering to build a home for a family, or giving back to those who lost their home in Paradise are all amazing volunteering opportunities. Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change peoples lives, It allows you to play a role in someone elses life. Helping people who may not be able to help themselves is an amazing quality to gain. Volunteering is a way of giving back to your community while developing important social skills, and gaining valuable work experience all at the same time. Overall my experience with this project was extremely fulfilling. I was able to meet people that I otherwise never would have met. I felt that being in the positive environment was rejuvenating. As well as meeting new people I was able to help people in less fortunate situations as me. I enjoyed feeling productive and helpful. This project taught me many good lessons and has pushed me to try to vo lunteer regularly from now on.

Genres such as comic books tend to have many elements in common; however, more similarities can be detected when the scope of the genre is further narrowed. Most specifically, a multitude of comic books display elements of mythology. Whether it be the characters or the archetypes displayed throughout, mythology has played a large role in today’s and the past’s comic books and art based off of those comic books. The appeals, ethos, pathos and logos are used to help the reader relate to the comics. Some com ics even borrow languages and archaic dialogue from mythology. In Thor: The Dark World, Stan Lee use of pathos allows the reader to sympathize with not only Thor, but one of the villains, Loki. With the two being adopted brothers, the death of their mother helps the reader understand that there is a certain complexity to Loki and that he is not simply a character who is there to ruin the universe. In this lab, my group and I main focus was to find out the acceleration of an object that is dropping while thinking that there are no force acting on it due to gravity. Guess what? According to experiment 2, there were two different steel balls that was getting tested. One steel ball was bigger than the other one. First, we used the large steel ball to measure trial 1,2 and 3 with a balance scale, then we used the smaller steel ball for trial 4 and 5. The procedure for both was the same. The total mass for the big ball had a mass of 28.4 grams while the smaller one had a mass of 16.4 grams. Next, the height was measured from the release mechanism to the target pad. According to the data sheet the height was provided for us. For trial 1, we had to release the ball from the height of 0.75(m), 1.0(m) for the second trail, 1.5(m) for the third and fourth, and 1(m) for the last trial. Before anything the elapsed time must be on zero while the ball is grip on the release mechanism because I noticed that if the number was different from zero, that means that there’s a bad contact between the ball and the mechanism. To avoid that situation, it is important to tighten the ball with the release mechanism. we had to release the ball four times before calculating the average time of flight. When the ball dropped on the time pad, I had received the time of .390 secs on my next three tries we had acquired an estimation close to the amount of seconds as my first try. When we calculated the average by adding all the numbers and dividing it by 4. The average time came up to 0.389 secs. This shows that the time of flight wouldn’t change as bad. As we continued the process with the rest of the trails, I notice that the average for the small ball was actually comparable with the big ball. That was really shocking and exciting to me. Once we were finish with the average for 1-5 trial, the most interesting part was finding the calculation for each trial combine. Now I know you wondering, how would you do that? Oggi, con tutte le sue diversificazioni, e infatti presente ovunque: radio, televisione e internet diffondono musica in continuazione, basta pensare che grazie alla globalizzazione e ai siti specializzati come iTunes e possibile essere sempre aggiornati sulle ultimissime canzoni uscite, testimoniando un'esigenza praticamente sempre esistita. Per esempio nella preistoria era considerata un'espressione del mondo spirituale, mentre per il mondo classico era uno strumento di piacere, che accompagnava la lettura delle opere letterarie (tradizione che poi e proseguita quando i cantori di corte hanno lasciato il posto ai i menestrelli). Questi esempi sono solo dei semplici accenni ma sono efficaci perche dimostrano come l'essere umano abbia da sempre avuto l'esigenza di produrre e ascoltare melodie e canzoni. Quando sono triste o delusa, per qualche ragione, mi ritiro nella mia stanza e ascolto musica finche non riesco a calmarmi. Mi piace pero soprattutto viverla: dal momento che non so suonare nessuno s trumento, mi diverto a sentire chi la musica la sa fare, pensando che quelle canzoni sono anche per me. Mi piace sentire la musica dal vivo, andare ai concerti insieme ai miei amici e condividere quei momenti. Ascoltare la musica tra tanta gente mi rende felice ed elettrizzata tanto che per giorni non riesco a togliermi quella sensazione. Devo essere sincera, raramente ho provato un'emozione simile, percio quando ne ho l'opportunita partecipo ad un concerto e la mia visione del mondo cambia. Penso veramente che le canzoni, almeno certe canzoni, ci leggano dentro, ci aiutino a capire chi siamo e l'epoca in cui viviamo. Ecco perche sono seriamente convinta che la musica sia un linguaggio universale.
